DWB Welcomes: Dr Kevin Foster

Kevin Foster, Ph.D. ​is an educational anthropologist currently serving as the Associate Chair for the Black Studies Department at The University of Texas at Austin. His passion is to bring research, teaching and community engagement together to improve academic outcomes for African American and other students. With the support of his project teams, Dr. Foster is engaged in a wide range of activities related to student achievement, including developing and running student programs focused on the academic success of Hispanic and Black secondary students. In 2009-2010, he served in the Federal Government as an Executive Branch Policy Fellow assigned to the National Science Foundation. There he supported community-university partnerships to improve student outcomes. In 2011, he founded Blackademics Television, which airs on PBS stations across the country. Dr. Foster currently also manages the Dan Rather Prize for Innovation in Education, and designs and leads professional development activities for educators.

Over his career, Dr. Foster has authored dozens of publications, including academic articles and national columns. In 2021, he will start a four-year term as a Trustee on the Austin School District’s Board of Trustees. Dr. Foster received his Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Texas at Austin, and his B. A. from the College of William and Mary. He has two children, Malcolm and Marlee.
